  • On any particular day, there are about 400,000 children in foster care in the U.S.
  • In 2013, about 640,000 U.S. children spent time in foster care.
  • Children in foster care remain there for an average of almost 2 years.
  • 9% of children in foster care have been there for more than 5 years.
  • 15% of children in foster care live in group homes or institutions.
  • In 2012, 10% of children leaving foster care aged out of the system. This is over 23,000 teens and young adults in 2012 alone.
