A print catalog arrived in the mail from Tiny Prints last week. I sent them a note about it:
Dear Tiny Prints,
This is the second time in the past couple years I have contacted you regarding this same issue. Your catalog arrived in the mail today, and although I appreciated that there was an Asian/White family featured in a few of the photos, there was again a great dearth of models of color. In the catalog, there was ONE Black child in a single photo. This is out of a total of 184 total persons in the catalog. We are a multiracial family including Black, Cherokee, and White ancestors. Although I love the designs in your catalog, we will not be supporting your company. We order 100+ cards each winter holiday season, and we will put our money behind a company that shows families and children that look like ours.
I first discovered Tiny Prints’ monoracial issue while exploring birth announcement designs a couple years ago. I went back to their birth announcement page last week. It’s still sooo White. The whole site is. I feel strongly about this issue: we consciously choose to support companies who use their advertising dollars to show families that look like ours. Companies that don’t? Forget it.
